WA-GA-THA-KA History
WA-GA-THA-KA (In Chippewa, the language of the Ojibwa Indians)
“Dwelling place among the birch trees.”
Tucked along the shores of beautiful Wabana Lake near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Wa-Ga-Tha-Ka is more than a resort—it is a story nearly a century in the making.
It began in the 1920s, when Morey and Barbara Miner, two schoolteachers with a dream and a deep appreciation for the Northwoods, created a place where families could gather, unwind, and reconnect. Together with their sons, Jon and Doug, they built a tradition that would span generations—welcoming guests not just as visitors, but as part of the Wa-Ga-Tha-Ka family.
In those early years, the heart of the resort was The Lodge. Guests arrived from miles around for Barbara’s legendary meals—especially her famous chicken dinners and homemade pies—served with warmth, laughter, and a sense of belonging. It was a time when days were spent on the water and evenings gathered together, sharing stories under the glow of lantern light.
As the years passed, the resort evolved with the times. In the 1960s, kitchens were added to the cabins, giving families the freedom to create their own traditions while still enjoying the spirit of the resort. Through it all, the essence of Wa-Ga-Tha-Ka remained unchanged.
Today, as a third-generation, family-owned resort, that legacy continues with Mark and Kim, and Jay and Connie—along with their families—who proudly carry forward the traditions started 100 years ago. While thoughtful updates have added comfort and convenience, the cabins still reflect their original character, preserving the authentic “Up North” experience that guests have cherished for decades.
Wa-Ga-Tha-Ka has always been about connection—to nature, to family, and to something timeless.
This year, we celebrate 100 years of sunsets and family hospitality—a century of memories, laughter, and traditions passed from one generation to the next.
And while much has changed over the years, one thing remains true:
At Wa-Ga-Tha-Ka, you’re not just visiting—you’re part of the family.
We wanted to give you a sense of what the resort looked like in the 1920’s.

Here is a link to a video series called “Gems of Itasca”. This episode talks about resorts and features WA-GA-THA-KA and the Wabana Chain among others.
We have also received some great exposure over the years. Below, one of our cabins was featured in Cabins of Minnesota.
